Relative Configuration and D & L system of nomenclature

Configuration

" The arrangement of atoms or groups in space is known as Configuration "
Configuration we have to study about are of two types -
  1. Relative Configuration
  2. Absolute Configuration

Here , in this article , we will discuss about Relative Configuration and D & L system of nomenclature , which is based on Relative Configuration .

Relative Configuration

" The arrangement of atoms in an optically active molecule and based on chemical interconversion from or to a known compound is known as Relative Configuration ."

D & L system of Nomenclature

  1. Various scientists from time to time considered Glyceraldehyde as their standard compound and gave following nomenclature to it .

  2. The (+) Glyceraldehyde which have its -OH group on its right side and -H on left side was given the configuration D . On the other side , the (-) Glyceraldehyde which have its -OH group on the left side and -H on the right was given the configuration L .
  3. If any compound is prepared from the compound having D configuration will be said to have D configuration . Similarly, if any compound that can be prepared from the compound having L Configuration will be said to have L configuration . This concept is known as Relative Configuration .
  4. But in the case of any compound containing more than one chiral carbon atoms , the configuration at one centre i.e. the bottom chiral carbon is related to Glyceraldehyde while the configuration of other carbon atoms are determined relative to the first .
  5. In some cases , the chiral centre is substituted with other groups than -OH and -H . For these cases , the substituent with higher priority is considered during the nomenclature . The compound will be considered as D if the substituent is at right side at L if the substituent is at left side .
  6. Remark : In this system if nomenclature , it must be noted that the capital letters D and L only denotes the configuration of the compound , whereas the direction of rotation is refered by the the sign in parentheses say (+) or (-) .
