Diatonic Musical Scale

Musical Scale :-
The set of tones with the help of which , we can build melodies and harmonics is known as a musical scale . It is defined as "A series of notes which sounds in such a way that the ratio between their freqencies is definite and can produce a pleasant effect of sound on ear" .
Musical scale is devided into two types -

  1. Diatonic Musical Scale
  2. Equally temlered musical scale

We will now discuss about Diatonic musical scale in this article .

Diatonic Musical Scale :

  1. Diatonic musical scale consists of eight notes which are in ascending order of frequencies .
  2. The frequency ratio of the eighth and first note is 2:1 .
  3. Diatonic musical scale includes five whole steps and two half steps . These two half steps are seperated from each other by two or three whole steps .
  4. The frequency of first note is 256 Hz while the frequency of the last note is 512 Hz (2:1) .

Characteristics of diatonic scale :

  1. The interval between any note of diatonic scale and the key note always bears a simple ratio .
  2. Intervals between any two adjacent notes also bears a simple ratio .
  3. In musical scale , the product of the intervals is known as the sum of intervals .
  4. The intervals between any two notes is equal to the sum (as mentioned above) of the intervals between the intermediate notes .
Drowbacks of Diatonic Musical Scale :
There is a practical difficulty occurs in using of diatonic scale . It was that the singer often changes his initial key note and he may starts with any other keynote say C or D or E .
But if he do so , then another scale with the above given intervals have to be constructed or the sound becomes unpleaseant . In this way , we rquire some additional frequencies .
The frequencies developed by instruments depends on the singer , hence the instrument has to be constructed according to the frequencies of singer or all the frequencies has to be incorporate into the instrument , due to which the size of the instrument will be very large .
To avoid this difficulty , Equally Tempored Musical Scale is developed which we will discuss in our following article .

So , this was an article to have some knowledge about the Diatonic Music Scale .
