Introduction :- SONAR stands for SOund NAvigation And Ranging . SONAR is basically a technique used to navigate , communicate or detect objects , on or under the surface of water using Sound Propagation . It is based on the principle of Echo Depth Sounding .
Mechanism of SONAR :- The whole arrangement of SONAR is shown in the figure below .
As we can see in the above figure , there is a transmitter and a receiver is embaded in any ship .
In this method , the transmitter transmits an Ultrasonic Pulse into the water , which then reflects by any aquatic animal or Seabed and later received by the receiver .
Now , the time taken by the pulse in transmitting and receiving is recorded which is then used to measure the distance between the object and transmitter . The angular position of the transmitter can also be changed because sound beam is a directional beam , therefore for every echo , the knowledge of angular position of transmitter and the distance of target is necessary for the measurement of the speed of target and its direction.
This was a knowledge about the method of SONAR and uses of SONAR . I hope that it was helpful to you and you liked it .
