Definition : Quality of sound is one of the characteristics of sound which plays a key role to help us distinguish between the sound produced by two different musical instruments although their pitch and loudness may be same . It enables us to distinguish between the sound produced by two different sources . This characteristic of sound is known as Quality of Sound.
The frequencies and loudness of two sounds may be same , but still it can be distinguished with the help of quality of sound.
Harmonics :
Most of the bodies vibrates in a very complex manner and these bodies consists of different frequencies say 2 , 3 , 4 etc. in addition to the fundamental frequency . These additional tones of these bodies is known as Overtones or Harmonics .
Definition : The sound waves having frequency which is positive integer multiple of the fundamental frequency (frequency of original wave) is simply known as harmonics of that sound.
• Harmonics are responsible for the Quality of Sound.
Determination of Quality of Sound :-
A complex vibration is composed of a number of component simple tones .
According to a scientist named Helmholtz , the quality of sound depends on the number , relative frequencies and intensities of these conponent simple tones .
This is the reason why the quality of sounds produced by different sound sources is different , and therefore we can easily recognize the sounds of Violin and Harmonium or at of the other musical instruments.
This was the complete knowledge about the Quality of Sound .
