Definition :- The persistence of audible sound even after the source has been switched off , is known as Reverberation of sound . While the duration for which the sound persist is known as the Reverberation Period or Reverberation Time.
Cause of Reverberation :- When any sound is produced inside any building , it expands and gets reflected from all the surfaces of the building like walls , cieling and floor . As a result , the present audience will receive a direct sound from the source followed by series of sound reflected and travelling towards them . Therefore the listener will continue to receive the sound even after the source of sound has stopped emitting . This phenomenon is known as Reverberation .
• Reverberation time depends on the volume of the hall and the surface area of the various surfaces of the hall like walls , ceiling etc. and the absorption coefficient of these surfaces .
Optimum Reverberation Time:- The reverberation time which is most desirable for a given room size and a given use , such as speech , chamber music etc. is known as Optimum Reverberation Time .
