Polarization:- Polarizing Power and Polarizability

We will understand the concept of polarizing power and polarizability with the help of concept of Polarization :-
We know that anions are larger in size than cations and therefore their electron cloud are less lightly held . A small highly charged cation can attract that electron cloud of the large anion in a manner that it increases the electron density between the nuclei . In this way , anions and cations aombines and makes a molecule . This process is known as polarization .
Polarizing Power:- The tendency or ability or power of a cation to attract the electron cloud of the large anion is known as its Polarizing Power .
Polarizability:- The tendency of the anion to be attracted is known as polarizability.

The polarizing power of a cation is directly proportional go its charge and inversely proportional to its radius . Or we can say that polarizing power of a cation is proportional to its charge/radius ratio .
Polarization of the cation is not much because of its small size .
In the compounds consisting of large negative ions and small positive ions , the polarization leads to partial covalent character in ionic compounds .

This was the concept of polarization , polarizing power and polarizability . Hope you liked it , Comment for any queries and Stay Tuned .
